Sophrology: A method for harmony between body and mind
What is sophrology?
Sophrology, created by Alfonso Caycedo, takes its name from three Greek terms:
SOS: harmony
Phren: consciousness
Logos: study
It is defined as the science of harmonious consciousness. A psychocorporeal practice, it combines techniques from meditation, yoga and Western relaxation, to promote a state of balance between body and mind.
Sophrology is based on breathing exercises, dynamic relaxation and positive visualization. These tools help to energize personal resources, strengthen individual capacities and promote self-awareness. In practice, it guides individuals towards a state of deep relaxation, called the sophronic state, while maintaining full awareness.
The fundamental principles of sophrology
1. Dynamic relaxations
Dynamic relaxation, often practiced in groups, sitting or standing, constitutes one of the pillars of sophrology.
They allow you to:
Develop a better understanding and listening to your body.
Relax mentally.
Strengthen your relationship with the surrounding space.
Balancing emotions, thoughts and behaviors.
Through different stages, these exercises promote inner alignment and better stress management.
2. Sophrology or specific techniques
Sophronizations, used mainly in individual sessions, take place in a personalized setting. The sophrologist uses a monotonous and soothing tone to guide the person into a cerebral state dominated by alpha waves, conducive to mental suggestion.
The exercises are defined in advance between the sophrologist and the client and aim to:
Stimulate specific abilities (concentration, creativity, stress management).
Strengthen the individual's positive structures.
Work on defined goals such as self-confidence, emotional calm or fear management.
Practical applications of sophrology
Sophrology is an adaptable method that can meet various needs:
Stress and Anxiety Management
Improved concentration and memory
Preparation for important events (exams, competitions, interviews)
Support during periods of change (pregnancy, bereavement, life transitions)
Management of chronic pain and sleep disorders
An approach accessible to all
Whether in individual or group sessions, sophrology is an accessible method, practicable at any age and without contraindications. It offers concrete tools to better live your daily life, cultivate positivity and strengthen your overall well-being.
“Sophrology is an invitation to reconnect with yourself, your resources and your inner balance.”
